Composing for Good
An opportunity for the Duff Studio musicians to use their talents and share their music for the betterment of themselves and our community.
What is Composing for Good?
Greg and Emily, the owners of Duff Piano Studios, are dedicated to fostering musical creativity and giving back to their community. Through the Duff Studio Composition Challenge Project, they have found a unique way to combine these passions, guiding their students on a creative piano composition journey while contributing to worthy community causes.
All students of the studio have an opportunity to participate in our project. At lessons, students learn how to compose, edit, record, and finally at the annual recital, perform. Your child will have an opportunity to participants in the challenge. As a participant they will go through the stages of composing, learning, recording, and performing an original piano piece. Their compositional journey begins with discovering a simple melody, and over several weeks, developing it into a complete musical composition. Greg and Emily provide coaching throughout the process, helping their students grasp musical concepts such as harmony, rhythm, and score writing.
Upon completion of their composition, students will record their piece, which will then be published in both book and online formats. They will also have an opportunity to proudly perform their composition at a recital , with proceeds donated to a local charity.
The project offers students the joy and satisfaction of creating and publishing their own unique musical works, while also learning new skills and techniques at the piano that they will value for life. Additionally, students and their families can take pride in knowing that their talents contribute to the local community.
Keep an eye out for the next composition challenge and support the studio and the students in this creative and community-focused musical endeavor.
Who Benefits From Composing for Good?
Each year, with input from their students, parents, and community, Greg and Emily select a local charity to whom the proceeds from the Composing for Good performance, book purchases, and related activities are donated. To date Stigma Enigma, Autism Services Ontario, Windsor Essex County Children’s Aid Society, Maryvale, and Street Help are among the groups that have been supported.
